By now we all know that the The Ring, The Grudge and other Japanese horror flicks were westernized by Hollywood. But that isn't the first. Remember Godzilla?
Now they're doing it on the boobtube. Two of todays hottest tv show were borrowed from other countries. The Office, a docu-comedy starring Steve Carell (of The 40 Year Old Virgin flick) was originally aired in the UK starring Ricky Gervais. Ugly Betty, about an ugly secretary working at a fashion magazine... shades of Betty La Fea (loosely translated, Betty the Ugly One) from Colombia! I'm kinda missing F.R.I.E.N.D.S. .... well... hmm... If you wanna see these shows plus lots more, click here! |

Would you agree on me that Hollywood ran out of ideas long ago!

Probably, producers just aren't willing to invest hundreds of millions in something new.

I agree Megatron. Also consider the piracy rate these days. Producers just can't simply invest on films that would be pirated later on.

Good point Megatron. But does it still end up being cheaper with sequels with returning actors? For sure there are increased pay in their talent fees especially since the main actors/actresses make millions. And how about the reproduction expenses?

If not copying from an original source, there's the remakes, sequels, and prequels.
And then there's the "retelling of". Same story, but as seen from another eye. Just look at these two movies both released in 2006. It tells the real life story of the fiercest battle during WW2 that took place in the tiny island of Iwo Jima. As their titles suggest, "Flags of our Fathers" deals with the American's point of view while "Letters from Iwo Jima" deals with the Japanese side of the story. |
