Default Domain names related to tragedies

The recent VA Tech tragedy has prompted some profiteering individual to conduct a shopping spree on related domain name. This could be a quite profitable venture as the cost of registering such domains is generally less than $10 — but some are now being auctioned off for thousands.

A Phoenix man, according to the story, began buying dozens of domain names — CampusKillings.com, VirginiaTechMurders.com, SlaughterInVirginia.com — in the hopes of selling them later to the highest bidder. He claim that this is a golden opportunity to cash in on such unfortunate event.

Sad to say, this practice is getting rampant. Any big news event would easily catapult an otherwise innocent domain name to become a hot commodity. Remember 9/11, tsunami in Asia or Katrina? All these tragedies had prompted buying of related domain names especially as search engines are picking up high volume of keywords searches from the users.

I wonder how can this unscrupulous actions from profiteering individuals be curtailed.

On the optimistic side, this is one good reason to market products. Say, college jerseys can be customized with Virginia Tech, or the helmets could have Tsunami logo. That is in one way of remembering the tragedies on a good side.

Where there is a chance to get a profit you will see somebody out there taking on it. The idea that prevails is if I dont capitalize on it then others will...so better be the leader of the pack than wait for nothing.

As long as there are people willing to pay high price for tragedy related domain names there will always be people buying and selling on other people's misfortunes.

Money can really show the dark side of mankind. It is so heartless but sad to say it is a reality. Its ok if they buy this domain name to use it for humane purposes but to resell them at exorbitant price is so scrouge.
