Default Opt-In on merchant's salesletter = losing commissions?

In my clickbank account, I read this guideline: When a purchase is made the commission is awarded to the last affiliate who referred the customer to that particular publisher.

How do you interpret this?

What if my traffic decide to get newsletter/salesletters directly from the merchants, does that mean that the merchant would stop tracking the sales as my coming from me since they would be opting to the offers/freebies that are offered by the merchant?

Would that mean, that the merchant doesn't need to pay a commission, because the last site is the merchants site? Or is counting the last affiliate site?

I think this is a cookie related question which would also be applicable in AffiliateBOT accounts. The first time visitor visit the vendor's site he would be cookied as your referral. When they return and buy something, as long as it's within 60 days, you should get the sale.

But if the visitor has visited the site via some other affiliate's link on the said second visit and purchases on that occassion, then the second affiliate gets the sale.

No, as a merchant myself I know that this would create major backlash, it is presumed that merchants will not advertise their own cookies, to allow the original referrers to get credit they are due for their sales. This includes newsletters on sales pages, etc.

Interesting take Gallito... I sure hope merchants are listening. I know some merchants do use their own cookie to track their newsletter sales and that could erase the affiliate's cookies.
