Default Wikipedia posts battle against link spamming!

Wikipedia recently announced to adhere nofollow tags. Nofollow tags will prevent link spamming in the site. It was said that many advertisers and site owners abuse the wikipedia entries by providing, sort of, "helpful" links only to improve their ranking in search results.

Some believe this to be anti-competitive. See full article at TechCruch.

so why would someone write in the wikipedia now as they wouldn't get any benefit from it?

Well, Wikipedia is supposed to be an open-source of knowledge. You mainly contribute there for the purpose of sharing knowledge and informative data, not to improve your search listings - if it follows, well, then good.

Well this has got to be a major problem since it is a wiki website . and also the fact that spam is just on the rise and it is really becoming to difficult to control it . One can see examples on social networking websites . Although it has now been declared that all links on the site would be tagged as "No Follow." That means, in essence, that the links become invisible to search engines like Google's. The engines won't take the links into account in ranking search results. Wikipedia is adopting the policy to reduce spammers' incentives to add spam links to the encyclopedia.
