i think affiliate marketing evolved from paid CPM ads, which is the most basic form of advertising. i guess when advertisers realize their ads didn't meet their target ROIs, affiliate marketing was the best way to go.
also, i would prefer to promote products that i personally approve of. it makes me feel uneasy to run an ad of a product i have no confidence in.
as for websites, i appreciate good writing, and great design.
