In the course of my searching and reading, i stumbled into the following valuable lessons in e-mail marketing which I really thought are worth sharing:

1. The layout affects clickthrough rates. The re-styling of a monthly newsletter layout gave a 50% increase of clickthrough rates.

2. The graphic affects newsletter subscriptions. By changing the layout of a subscription box they doubled the subscribber base in one week.

3. The autoresponder works. A simple autoresponder system on a web site gave them 20% conversions increase.
