How to monetize Facebook?

It's really scary when you look at the amount of growth Facebook has achieved in the pass year ,but with no clear strategy of monetizing the traffic as yet.

What do you think is the problem?

I think in a social network site, people log on to manage their stuff so they're too caught up to pay attention. Maybe text links is the key?

With all that data, they could easily categorize all the users secretly, creating a valuable database that can be sold to or work with third-party companies. If successful, they can set up their own online stores, with products and services that they've found to be popular with users. Plus the advertising that they can sell with the knowledge from their research and test marketing, if they also set up more advertisement slots.

But no, there's confidentiality agreements and privacy policies. Too bad.

They'll have to be the advertisers themselves to generate revenue? Or maybe waiting for the next big change of the internet to be in their favour?

I think text links are a good idea, in a Snap Preview kinda format. Perhaps the lack of intrusive ads are a good thing. May have kept a lot of new users from getting turned off by the ads.

But at some point, you'd think that people are too stuck with their profiles that they can't switch without dire consequences. But wait, with google's open social, that pretty messed up their plans.

Well, they have already launched their own ppc ads. They brought in, if I am not mistaken, the same guy who built the GOOGLE ppc ads... I think it'll work out.

But why not just use google ads?

I think that's a good idea, and with the traffic they're getting they can have customized boxes.
