Shopping Cart Software - A visitor to your website uses the shopping cart software to add items to his/her cart and then goes to the 'checkout'. They submit their credit card details on a secure page.
Payment Gateway - Your payment gateway / credit card processing company then works in the background, performs all the necessary checks and if successful, withdraws funds from the customer's credit card account and gives them to you.
Internet Merchant Account - The funds are deposited into your Internet Merchant Account (IMA). The funds are usually then transferred out into your regular business account.
