Default Money.co.uk sold for 2.4 million dollars

With sites like money.co.uk sold for $2.4 million, there's been talk as to if it was really worth as much.

Looks like an affiliate site with lots of outgoing links to merchant sites related to finance, loans, investements, banking, credit cards.

The domain name played a big part in the price as the content is nothing special. Unless, it was earning lots of affiliate commission and the seller was selling it's 'future' potential.

Which begs the question, would you maintain a site for 10 years that will earn you $3 million or sell the same site for $1 million after working on it for 5 years?

I think the buyer really knows what he wants to do with the domain and usually that's nothing to do with what the domain is currently used for.

And as for the seller, the offer price must be quite a bit more than what he's earning before he would want to sell it.

For example, the current owner of this domain may only have the capacity to put in affiliate links and hope that misc traffic from search engines or typed in traffic earns him a good living from the domain, but the buyer may have a lot more resources to build it into a serious business. The domain itself is an easy to remember ONE word domain and if the site is build into a financial UK portal, it's worth will be far, far greater than the $2.4 million..
