Many companies make money using such tools, but automated submission is a waste of time and bandwidth. Hand-submission to quality sites helps both human traffic and some ranking value, if both sites are in the same niche and one is an authority site.

I did it 10 years ago when my web host offered it for free. I got some angry emails from sites saying that they did not feature English language sites so why was I wasting their time. I also got some spam.

Today I don't believe there are 50,000 directories, so the wild claims of tools that submit to many "search engines" are either false or they must be spamming guest books or blog comments.

I agree. The best marketing is targeted marketing. Submit to sites that reach people who really are good prospects for you.

Also, look at it from the point of view of the user. If you need to find information on a particular topic, are you going to go to a directory that is filled with every business under the sun? Or, are you going to seek out a directory that has some relevance to what you are looking for?

It is worth the time and effort to seek out those directories that are of relevance to your business and are likely to be used by your customers.
