Default Links on forums

Most Webmasters forums allow signatures in the members' posting as it will attract traffic to their sites. These links tend to be misused by the new members by putting up their advertisement rather than providing useful information about their sites or personal profiles.
Most new Webmasters also tend to join the forums just to spam their website links all over the place. This is a very bad practice as other members will not only avoid the site listed but may also blacklist such sites. In this case, these spam links are worst than dead links.. they are classified as harmful links.
Forums are actually good places to build links if proper techniques were adopted, such as providing useful information and advices over time and members will start to visit your sites in your signature.

yes it is , but i am reading a lot of stuff these days about the forum signature marketing . Because it is touted to have double benefits , firstly that it is a good search engine optimisation technique through link building . it is always good torank up the ladder in search engine rankings . plus the other thing is ofcourse forum members , here is depends completely on you as what you post on forum can make or mar your reputation , you should try an establish yourself as a good member so that other members are curious to search out your links .

Most forms of spammy behaviour have been deprecated by the SE algos, therefore forum sigs have very little ranking benefit. They are definitely good for human traffic.

Absolutely! But participating in well targeted forums can really get really high quality (albeit non-search engine) traffic that converts (probably better than SE traffic).

And welcome Trainsem to the new and AffiliateBOT forum! Always good to have an SEO guru around!

Default Good Thought!

I have posted on many forums, only to be spammed later by other companies. I like that we can post our signature only after a certain amount of posts. What most people don't realize is that you can have a million links to your site, but unless they are relevant links (same business, etc), they really do not do you a lot of good.

ededed, this is a two year old thread but it is still valid today. No PR at all on this page (indexed in Google), which shows how G treats forum pages.

Participating is totally different from advertising. You must have enough great information and lots of good services on your target site if you want to link to it from forums.

Good information on your posts plus good information on your target site is always a great way to give great information.

It is a very useful tip. I'm new to the SEO business and not noticing the harm of bad link building practice could cause. Thanks for the reminder.

Forum marketing is another excellent strategy for building a list of subscribers and sending tons of traffic to your website.

Forum marketing is a highly underrated, but extremely effective strategy for building a list of subscribers, driving highly-targeted traffic, and establishing yourself as an authority in your particular market.

Forums put you directly in front of your target market, making it a goldmine for driving thousands of highly targeted visitors to your website.

But keep in mind here that the key to successful forum marketing is to become an active participant in the community. Your first priority is to deliver lots of value. And that means posting highly valuable content in the forums and helping people with their questions.

Once you’ve become a trusted member and delivered some great value in your posts, people will naturally want to learn more about what you have to offer.

This is where your signature link comes in…

You’ll want to use your signature link to send people to your squeeze page where you can build your list of subscribers.
