SEO for pictures?

While everyone is clamouring to be best ranked for sites, what about pictures? Most SERPS have several filter options like blogs, pictures, news etc. And they all link somewhere.

What do you think of targeting picture rankings? Let's say the first page for "dogs" has 10 of your pictures, going back to your site, would that be equal to being ranked #1 for "dogs" for sites?

Ranking high in the picture searches... hmmm, I wonder how many image searches are there compared to text searches. Possibly relevant to 'fan/idol' sites, porn sites, image heavy sites, galleries, online comics, etc.

Well it is the same.You have an image and it suits a keyword for a search made and it shows on the first page.With common keyword phrases like dogs and cats it is impossible to have your picture placed on a regular basis.But with unique keywords say like a automobile or it's spare parts if your image suits the search tag on Google there is every chance that will get your picture displayed on the first page.More over if the guest/visitor is really interested to get more out of it they might visit your website via the original source shown in Google.

People may not know this yet, but pictures do get tons and tons of traffic from google image search. The reason? Simple, most SEOs are NOT targeting this segment yet, so if you do, you get most of the traffic. So, be sure to name your pictures well and have alt text.
