The recent VA Tech tragedy has prompted some profiteering individual to conduct a shopping spree on related domain name. This could be a quite profitable venture as the cost of registering such domains is generally less than $10 — but some are now being auctioned off for thousands.
A Phoenix man, according to the story, began buying dozens of domain names — CampusKillings.com, VirginiaTechMurders.com, SlaughterInVirginia.com — in the hopes of selling them later to the highest bidder. He claim that this is a golden opportunity to
cash in on such unfortunate event.
Sad to say, this practice is getting rampant. Any big news event would easily catapult an otherwise innocent domain name to become a hot commodity. Remember 9/11, tsunami in Asia or Katrina? All these tragedies had prompted buying of related domain names especially as search engines are picking up high volume of keywords searches from the users.
I wonder how can this unscrupulous actions from profiteering individuals be curtailed.
