My friend was complaining that he got an average appraisal and got passed by from his dream promotion. Then I asked him about his common work habits... About his being on time for work, how he uses his leaves and accomplishing all tasks on schedule. it is clear that he is putting less effort and going for the extra mile and is not even too close to call for a pay rise or promotion.

But If you feel your boss is unfair most of the time...then that is the time to find a new employer. But let's give employers fair judgment, For sure they are looking for those deserving employees to promote and a give a raise to. You should not expect to get what you want if you do not give what they want. So start going for the extra mile, take the initiative to ask for more work, be competitive, efficient and come early to the office. I assure you that your boss will notice that.
