How to be "Kawaii"

"Kawaii" means cute in Japanese. It is one of Japan's many popular street fashions that is growing in popularity in the Western world today. It can be a little over-the-top, and is similar to Harajuku style, except that it is less extreme.

Tips on how to become a Kawaii:

* Be aware that looking Kawaii is for girls only. Sorry boys!
* Do not be afraid to stand out and be noticed. You will get some weird looks.
* Layer well - this is important. Also, wacky patterns are super. Wear as many colors together as you want and don't care if your clothes clash.
* Wear bright colors. Wear pink a lot and wear cute characters on your clothes. Do not wear jeans and a t-shirt. Wear something wild and crazy. Also, try to stay away from labels a little.
* Sport toys and/or bags made by Sanrio or San-X or items featuring anime characters.
* Wear ruffles and pastel colors.
* Accessorize! This is one of the few things that is different about being Kawaii and being Harajuku... Wear cute plastic, fuzzy, accessories of any kind.
* Style your hair like a manga character.

It only shows that most Japanese teens are young at heart and fashion-savvy.

Japanese have their own style when it comes to fashion like Kawaii-cute, Gothic Lolita- emphasizes Victorian-style girl's clothing and often aims to imitate the look of Victorian porcelain dolls, Ganguro- "black-face", the basic look consists of bleached hair, a deep tan, both black and white eyeliners, false eyelashes, platform shoes and brightly colored outfits.
